Performing Arts WA Awards

Julia’s production of YOU KNOW WE BELONG TOGETHER premiered at Perth Festival to wide critical acclaim, including two Performing Arts Western Australia Awards and an invitation to the Edinburgh Film Festival.

2020 HESTA Impact Award

In 2020, Julia was a joint winner of the Individual Distinction award at the HESTA Impact Awards. She was recognised for her work in changing perceptions of people with disabilities through her art. YOU KNOW WE BELONG TOGETHER was named specifically for it’s impact within the community.

2023 Creative Australia with Disability Award

Julia Hales was named a joint recipient of the 2023 National Arts and Disability Awards, which celebrated artists who are forging new pathways within the industry. Julia was honoured for her outstanding contribution to the arts, particularly for amplifying the voices and stories of people with disability

2019 40 Under 40 WA Business News

Julia was recognised for her leadership and impact in the community as an artist and advocate. This award endeavours to celebrate leaders under 40 who are making significant impact within their chosen fields.

2022 WA Australian of the Year Nominee

In 2022, Julia Hales was nominated for the WESTERN AUSTRALIAN AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD acknowledging her national impact as a playwright, performance maker and disability advocate.

In 2025 Julia Hales was awarded with a Medal of the Order of Australia, for her service to people with disability, and to the arts.
